Allen & Ginter Horse Racing Poster

Allen & Ginter Horse Racing Poster

Another major tobacco company that got into the sports trading card game in the 1880s was Allen & Ginter, though at a wary distance. A&G only issued cards for 6 baseball players among 50 cards inserted in its cigarette packages, reserving its main interest for the sport revered along Tobacco Road. This hard to find, intensely desirable poster from the mid-1880s reflects that ardor, beautifully presenting images of around 50 nags and their jockeys scattered around a centerpiece horseshoe reading "The World's Racers" and a horse's head above "Allen & Ginter, Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 Cigarettes, Virginia Brights." 16 x 28" poster is done in dark brown with gold borders, with the horse-and-jock illustrations within rectangular or oblong areas. Poster is G-VG with substantial paper loss along the lower left corner (though affecting only one of the rectangular images) and tearing and crinkling all along the left and right edges. However, very little of the body of the poster is affected and the poster as a whole looks quite cohesive.
