Amazing 1900 Boxing Signatures Including Gans, Fitzsimmons, Dixon & More
In July and August, 1900, former World Heavyweight Champion Robert Fitzsimmons was training for fights with Gus Ruhlin and Tom Sharkey at Bergin Beach in Brooklyn. Presented here are two sheets of paper which have been signed by fighters and guests to this training camp. A number of these are incredibly rare autographs. Robert Fitzsimmons has twice signed in ink, “Bob Fitzsimmons Training Quarters Bergin Beach LI NY Merrily Yours Robert Fitzsimmons” (dated July 31, 1900). His sparring partner and fighter signed, “Yours Truly Bob Armstrong.” In the upper left corner, the document has been signed in ink, “To My Friends, Joe Gans Aug 1900.” Next to Gans, heavyweight Jim Daly has added his signature. Below Gans the page has been signed by Owen Ziegler and George McFadden. In the center on a page added to the existing one by glue there is the ink inscription, “Yours truly Aug 29th 1900 Geo E Dixon.” Below Dixon there is a large signature of James J. Corbett and below that a large signature in ink of Matty Matthews, the early Light Heavyweight Champion. The signatures of Gans, Dixon, Armstrong, Daly, Ziegler, McFadden and Matthews are extremely rare. The good news for you autograph collectors is that the signatures can be separated as they were written large enough and far enough apart to accomplish this. One of the most important boxing autograph offerings ever seen in the hobby. The two pages do have some condition issues on the edges, but this does not affect the signatures, except the Bob in Fitzsimmons and Matty Matthews, and those only slightly.
