Babe Ruth Day Desk Set
Magnificent pen set presented to Mel Allen was given to him on the field at Babe Ruth Day on June 13, 1948 at Yankee Stadium. Billed as the 25th Anniversary of the House That Ruth Built, the real attraction was Babe Ruth himself. His last appearance ever at Yankee Stadium, he would don the uniform for the last time and they would retire his number. The silver plaque on the face of this elegant piece sings "1923-1948 Silver Anniversary Yankee Stadium." Above it is wonderful with engraved image of Yankee Stadium. Below is the subtle engraved facsimile signature of Mel Allen. This is significant, as Mel was the on the field announcer and is shown in many of the famous photographs of the event standing beside the Babe. Made by Shaeffer Pens with their elaborate tagging beneath. The fine but heavy black marble base is 10# across. Other than Wally Schang's, Barry Halper's was the only other one of these we had seen, and it sat on his desk for years as one of his faves. It will become yours too. NRMT-MT.
