Absolutely intriguing and delicious photo of the Babe, his wife Claire and mother-in-law snapped by AP at Yankee Stadium before the Yankees’ opening game on April 18, 1929. Check out the big lug’s face as he tries (and fails) to muster a smile and instead seems to sag in weary helplessness under the weight of Claire’s arm around his shoulder. Did Babe have a particularly late night? Or that he always looked this way when his mother-in-law was around? Even Claire’s wry, knowing look and tightly clenched jaw seem to tell a story we’d love to know. 7.5 x 9” photo is VG w/slight bunching along the top edge and light paper loss on the left edge. Verso has an affixed caption titled “Mrs. Ruth Sees Babe Clout One Over the Fence”. Just the Babe’s face alone makes this shot priceless.
