Babe Ruth Original Painting by Robert Riger

Babe Ruth Original Painting by Robert Riger

Original painting on canvas by noted sports artist and photographer Robert Riger (1924-1995). Ruth is pictured standing in his Yankees uniform, bat in hand, as he gazes pensively at the viewer. Signed by the artist along the base. Riger, who was a graduate of the Pratt Institute, began his art career working on magazine layouts for both Esquire and the Saturday Evening Post. He began focusing on sport drawings in the late 1940s and in 1954 was hired by Sports Illustrated, which published over 1,200 of his illustrations during his long association with the magazine. Riger later turned his attention to photography and was equally accomplished in that field, publishing several books of sports photography. He ended his career as a director for ABC's Wide World of Sports, for which he won several Emmy Awards. The painting (19x39") displays a few tiny abrasions and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Framed to total dimensions of 22.5x42". The size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
