Babe Ruth Retirement Illustration Artwork by Bob Coyne

Babe Ruth Retirement Illustration Artwork by Bob Coyne

“I hate like - to say it fellers but I’m going to retire….” Really, quite a heartbreaking illustration by Bob Coyne (of the Boston Post), chronicling Babe Ruth’s final words to the press (and fans) after his last game with the Boston Braves in 1935. Strikingly, Babe is portrayed as solitary and crestfallen in this original Coyne artwork, which includes a pasted-on speech caption, minor production notes, a penciled title - “Farewell to Arms,” and, most affectionately, a personal, inked caption added with an arrow pointing to the cartoonist’s signature, “To Father Coyle with Best Wishes From… Bob Coyne….” Contains disconnected mat boards, while work itself is EX, and measures 21 ? x 18 ?”.
