Oscar Emil Felsch was born to play baseball. Broad shouldered and powerful, his career as a .300+ hitter was a sure thing. He was quick to play a joke which helped him attain his nickname “Happy”. He played for the Charles Comiskey owned Chicago White Sox and that is where the trouble started. Comiskey, a notorious tightwad, treated his players like crap. Gamblers knew this and moved in on some of the Sox players during the 1919 World Series. Gullable “Hap” was one of them. He was $20,000 in the hole and it all seemed so easy. White Sox to Black Sox in a few easy lessons which continued into the 1920 season when the roof fell in. Maybe he knew what lay in front of him as he posed in 1915 for this riveting rookie portrait. Stamped “International” on the reverse, someone scrolled Felsch Baseball Crook 9-19 in blue pencil dated Jan 26, 1927. The photo has been trimmed to 5 X 6 1/2” and is in EX overall condition with minor hairline cracking.
