Brooklyn Dodgers Leave For Boston For The 1916 World Series By George Grantham Bain

Brooklyn Dodgers Leave For Boston For The 1916 World Series By George Grantham Bain

One of America’s earliest news picture agencies was run by George Grantham Bain. His agency was prominent in documenting sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, political activities, including the woman suffrage campaign, conventions and public celebrations. His photographs were worldwide in their coverage but with a special emphasis on life in New York City. The agency dates back as early as 1860 and continued through the 30’s. This superb Bain image shows Bill Pounds addressing the Brooklyn Dodgers in front of the YMCA as they prepare to head to Boston for the 1916 World Series. Photo is EX-MT and 6 X 4”. A large crowd is gathered in front of the YMCA and cars are double parked in the street. A few police are on hand to maintain control but the crowd appears to be well behaved. Photo has along its top edge, in white “Pounds Addressing Bklyn Team.” To the right, in black, “4010-4.” Reverse has “Departure of Brooklyns from Brooklyn for Boston Oct. 6, 1916.” Also a stamp from “Culver Service” and a label from the same company.
