Bruce Smith WWII Navy Fighter Pilot Jacket
Minnesota Gopher HB Bruce Smith capped off his collage career with a Heisman Trophy in 1941. He received his coveted award on December 9th, two days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As he stepped forward to receive his trophy in New York, an air raid alarm was sounded as a squadron of US Bombers was mistaken for incoming German aircraft. These events would eventually put him in the cockpit of Navy fighter planes. WWII was on! This tattered Naval pilot’s jacket was worn by Capt. Smith during the big one. The waist length jacket is all leather with a fleece collar and wool stretch waist band and is all original. A great crossover piece of US and football history with a storyline you can’t make up.
