Chick Gandil Photo

Chick Gandil Photo

Oct. 5, 1921 photo of two of the infamous “Eight Men Out” – with a grim-faced Chick Gandil, ringleader of the 1919 World Series fix, looking every bit the heavy on the right, next to a more carefree Swede Risberg – shows the pair before the scandal broke that nearly ruined baseball. It ran after the “Black Sox” perpetrators, which also included stars Shoeless Joe Jackson and Ed Cicotte, had been acquitted by a grand jury but still banned for life by Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis. Actually, Gandil was already gone, having quit in 1920 after a contract dispute with team owner Charlie Comiskey. Back of the 5.5 x 6.5 photo has date stamped and handwritten names of the pair and the notation “Credit: Keystone View Co. Inc.” Photo is VG-EX with one fold mark on the upper right corner and mildly asymmetrical edges due to being cropped with scissors.
