Circa 1860s Hand-Made Baseball Bat w/Paint Decoration

Circa 1860s Hand-Made Baseball Bat w/Paint Decoration

Early and crude, this circa 1860s hand-made baseball bat has a lot of character. Weighing a hefty 39 ounces and measuring 32.5", this bat is actually a little bit crooked; it may have been made that way on purpose or been subject to the shape of the wood available. Black paint is on the barrel and knob ends, and it is possible that additional paint was applied but it is difficult to tell in light of the age and use. Wonderful patina, it has some splits in the wood and some knots where you wouldn't expect on a bat, particularly a prominent one down by the handle; also displays a few nails on the knob end and some near the end of the barrel. Standing at over a century and a half old, this piece would make an impressive addition to any vintage bat or baseball equipment display.
