Circa 1900 Frank Chance Photograph, From Paul Thompson (Baseball Magazine Archive)

Circa 1900 Frank Chance Photograph, From Paul Thompson (Baseball Magazine Archive)

A scarce and very desireable early photograph of Frank Chance carrying his mitt and “Doctor’s Bag”. Noting the early catcher’s mitt, we can date the photo somewhat, since Chance caught from 1898, his first year in the Majors, until the middle of the 1902 season. He then moved to first base, becoming part of the celebrated lightning double-play combo “Tinker to Evers to Chance.” A Hall-of-Famer, Chance both played for and managed the Chicago Cubs during their glory days, winning four pennants in five years (1906-1910) and setting a season record of 116 wins - in a 152-game season - a record likely never to be surpassed. This outstanding photo is from Paul Thompson, the leading photo agency of the period, and a Thompson stamp appears on the reverse, as does a Baseball Magazine hologram. Corner loss in the lower right does not affect the image, and the photo is otherwise EX.
