Circa 1900 Spalding Mushroom Bat

Circa 1900 Spalding Mushroom Bat

Late 1800s-early 1900s Spalding mushroom bat is a wonderful throwback to baseball's formative days. While players were still trying to find the most efficient and effective ways of playing the sport, this bat was designed with the theory that an even weight distribution would help the batter. As such, the barrel is not much thicker than the handle and the "mushroom" knob adds extra weight to that end of the bat. "Spalding Mushroom" is burned in as the trademark, bat is uncracked, measures 33.5" and weighs a hefty 36 ounces, tremendous vintage look. As with many such experiments of the era, this design did not catch on, making it a rare and attractive example.
