Circa 1910 Leland Giants & West Ends Cross & Son Real Photo Postcard feat. Rube Foster SGC GD 2 (Only Known Example)
Amazing 1910 postcard from the lone season of the Negro Leagues' Leland Giants. The only known example, this 3.5x5.5" card has a wonderful team image of the Giants and their opponents, the "West Ends," with both teams identified in white. The card is unused except for a handwritten 8-20-10 on the reverse side and otherwise has great eye appeal, with only slight aging evident. The Chicago Leland Giants (no affiliation to this company) was a powerhouse team in the 1900s, but split into the Chicago Giants and the Leland Giants (named for owner and manager Frank Leland) in 1910; as it turned out, this was the only season the Leland Giants were in existence, further confirming the print year. Additional identification on the front sources the image from the "Mineral Point Fair," though we're unable to find any game on that date with these teams. In their lone season, the Leland Giants posted a 22-2-1 record in the Western Independence Club circuit, while legend has their overall record for the year standing at 123-6. The written date is the only "blemish" that impacts the card grade, but the SGC GD 2 does not at all reflect the overall appearance and historic significance.
