Circa 1910 St. Paul Colored Gophers Negro League Post Card
The St. Paul Colored Gophers were an independent African-American team formed in 1907, and a historic club that put significant pressure on the desegregation of baseball, making them a happy anomaly in baseball history. In this photo, seated in a chair is P.E. Reid. "Daddy Reid," the owner of the team. Seated on the ground at far right is outfielder Willis Jones, who played with the Colored Gophers from 1907-08. In 1909, the Colored Gophers defeated the Lelands Giants, known as the most powerful African-American team at that time. Throwback St. Paul Colored Gophers jerseys have been worn by the Minnesota Twins three times, including these exact ones, with "STPG" on cap. Post card is approximately 3.5x5.5", covered with protective holder at 4x7". Back of postcard has a few minor, small stains. Photo side of card is in excellent condition. SGC A.
