Circa 1910s Theodore Roosevelt & Kenesaw Landis Original Photograph (PSA Type I)

Circa 1910s Theodore Roosevelt & Kenesaw Landis Original Photograph (PSA Type I)

Presented is a circa 1910s Type I photo of Teddy Roosevelt and Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The photo was taken on April 17, 1917. Theodore Roosevelt was the nation's 26th President, and he served from 1901-1909. Before that, he was the U.S. Vice President under President William McKinley, and Roosevelt became President after McKinley's assassination in 1901. Roosevelt was already famous for leading a group called the "Rough Riders" in a cavalry charge up St. Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt was known as a "trustbuster" and in 1905, he appointed Kenesaw Mountain Landis as a Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Landis gained fame for his decision in 1907 to fine Standard Oil 29 million dollars for the company's violation of a law forbidding rebates on railroad shipping. Although the decision was eventually overturned on appeal, Landis gained praise for his decision against a "trust", virtual monopoly. Major League Baseball was embarrassed by the Black Sox scandal resulting from the 1919 World Series, and seeking strong leadership, MLB named Landis as its first commissioner in 1920. As the Baseball Commissioner, the decision by Landis to ban eight members of the Chicago White Sox from baseball for life, as he stated, "regardless of the verdict of juries," was hailed as a decisive step to clean up dishonesty in baseball. The 8x10" offered black & white photo exhibits some small paper loss near each of the corners, and the borders have a very slight uneven edge in spots. The back shows "Teddy R. & Judge Landis" written in pencil by an unknown hand. The images of Roosevelt and Landis are remarkably clear. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified as TYPE I AUTHENTIC.
