Clark Griffith Bat And Ball Fund Photograph

Clark Griffith Bat And Ball Fund Photograph

Clark Griffith was known as “The Old Fox” because he was able to think two steps ahead of most while a player, manager and owner. He won 20 or more games six years in a row for the White Stockings and accumulated 237 career victories. As an owner he worked within a limited budget but he reworked the waiver rules in his favor and kept the franchise going for many years. Photo (4 X 6”) concerns Griffith’s wartime effort to put money directly into the pockets of American soldiers fighting in France through the “Clark Griffith Bat and Ball Fund.” It shows Senators Eddie Cicotte and Nick Altrock, with Ray Schalk in his White Sox uniform between them. On the grass in front of Schalk is a ball (about the size of two basketballs) made to look like a baseball, with the top cut off. It was used to collect donations for the fund. Altrock has another ball for donations in his hand. Pic is NRMT.
