Collection of John Crandal Civil War Letters

Collection of John Crandal Civil War Letters

John Crandal was a Union sergeant who served with Company F of the 124th Regiment, Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. This collection contains 36 of Crandal's letters written during the Civil War. Most of these letters (34) are dated between March, 1863 and June, 1865 and were written primarily to Crandal's wife, Nan. Each of the letters in this collection has been lovingly transcribed. In reading them, one can get a real sense of battles, troop movements, camp activities and the sights and emotions experienced by a Union soldier serving on the front lines. Long marches, desertions, the loss of comrades and loneliness are all themes addressed therein, and the reader can sense Crandal's deep faith and concern for his family at home through his written words. Site references include Chattanooga, Chicamauga, Nashville and many other Southern communities that served as skirmish locales. Each of the original letters is enclosed in a plastic protective sleeve, with its own transcription attached. This rare and unique collection is sure to fascinate the Civil War buff or anyone interested in American history.
