Colonial Currency Collection
Splendid collection of extremely rare 18th century paper currency notes. Approx. 100 notes, the bulk from four circulations issued by Pennsylvania, the first three printed in Philadelphia by David Hall & William Sellers. April 3, 1772 notes have engraved border cuts by James Smithers and the Penn family arms. Pence denominations are smaller with typeset backs and come in plates A-C. One shilling notes and above have nature prints on the back and the border cut "J. Smither Sculp." "Pennsylvania" spelled in various ways on different denominations. October 1, 1775 notes have red and black ink with the Penn family arms on the front and a cast cut of a farm scene on the back. On the 10s-50s notes the text is partly in red so that it forms the roman numeral denomination of the note. The paper contains mica flakes. There are three signers with one frequently in red ink. "Pennsylvania" is spelled in various forms. Some notes inscribed "To Counterfeit is Death". October 25, 1775 notes are smaller in size, have plates A-C and have typeset backs. Notes of 1s and up have nature prints on the back Contains mica flakes and blue threads. In each denomination "Pennsylvania" is found in a different form.Usually numbered in red ink with at least one of the three signatures in red. April 10, 1777 notes are the first issue to carry the arms of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Printed by John Dunlap in Philadelphia on paper watermarked "PENSYL / VANIA" Also several notes from Delaware (June 1, 1759, printed by Benjamin Franklin & David Hall and featuring the English arms) and Maryland (March 1, 1770, printed by A.C. & W. Green, featuring border cuts engraved by Thomas Sparrow and nature prints on back). Condition of notes varies from VG-EX-NRMT, and while all are delicate, most are vivid and unblemished and preserved in clear wrapping either singly or in pairs.
