Cool Papa Ball Signed Baseball Trophy Radio from Lester Lockett
This is an interesting one. These baseball radios were sold back in the 1940s and are a highly sought after object. They were also actually sold to be used as trophies, with a brass band wrapping the base perfect for engraving. This one was gifted by Cool Papa Bell to Lester Lockett, a former Negro Leaguer and his teammate on the 1942 Chicago American Giants, Bell's final year as a player. In 1941, Cum Posey owner of the Homestead Grays gave these baseball trophy radios to his players and were engraved "HO. GRAYS, CHAMPS 1941." Now, this radio has half the band band cut off as is someone wanted to keep the engraved part. However, Cool Papa was not on that team. So did Cum Posey give this to Bell, we do not know. We do know that the radio is cool and valuable. But more importantly this one is signed by Cool Papa Bell with the signature authenticated by Beckett. Stands 9.5" tall, not currently working.
