Earliest Known Chinese Baseball Photograph - Later U.S. Ambassador
This spectacular mounted photo in high grade condition memorializes the 1881 Phillips Academy BBC. The image is perfect with as good a contrast as can be shown. The subject - Chentung Liang-Cheng aka Pi Yuk - played for Phillips Academy and was the sole Asian member of this rare integrated team. A wealthy son educated in the United States, he and other members of his class were brought here to be educated from China. They experienced tremendous racial bias and eventually left the school as a result of harassment by their classmates. But not before Chentung Liang-Cheng led his team to a victory over chief rival Exeter with a triple in spite of constant, ugly racial outbursts. He would return triumphantly to the US years later, with the title "His excellency Sir Chentung Liang-Cheng, Chinese Minister to the United States." The incredible photo itself is 13x10.25", the mount is overall 19.5x14.5" and original frame measures 19.75x25.5". It is in NRMT condition and is accompanied by a copy of the book "PHILLIPS ACADEMY ANDOVER ON DIAMOND, TRACK AND FIELD," picturing this photo and with Pi Yuk Boxscores. A transcendent piece for the future and perhaps the best investment in this auction. You can Google this very important piece for more incredible details.
