Enormous 19th Century Baseball Bat Trade Sign

Enormous 19th Century Baseball Bat Trade Sign

One of the largest bats that we have ever handled, we have seen longer ones but this trade sign has to be the heaviest, weighing in at 5.5 pounds. The barrel is enormous, measuring 35" long and 12.5" at the thickest point of circumference. We know that this was not meant for player use but rather to hang in or in front of a sporting goods dealer's store or perhaps a custom bat-makers shop. It is a beautiful work of folk art circa 1890s and has two rings of inlaid, hand carvings at the barrel end, there are a few chips here and there and the dense wood has some splits at spots.
