Perhaps the classic image of the Bambino hitting a home run in his early Yankee years. Taken at the Polo Grounds in a home pinstripe uniform dating it from the Babe’s pre-Yankee Stadium years. The two-tone cap he is sporting would only have been worn by Ruth from 1920-21. It is most likely that this was taken in his rookie year because of the incredible fame of the shot. It was likely used once he started hitting home runs for New York (was used on the jacket of a well-known 1920s Babe Ruth book). The composition of this image is magnificent! His figure is brilliantly contrasted by the darkness of the stands, the shadows at his feet and the halo of the iron facade of the old Polo Grounds overhead. He stands at the center perfectly balancing the image and making a stance that straddles the line of artistic grace and pure athletic muscularity. NRMT and untrimmed with perfect contrast. 8.5x6”. Early International Newsreel stamp on the verso.
