Five Exceptional Negro League & Latin Type I Photographs
Fabulous collection of Type I photographs all from one legendary Latin & Negro League collection: 1) 1935 New York Cubans at Durkee Field in Jacksonville Florida by Weems. Identified on the verso in pencil in the hand of Javier Perez (hence, it is autographed) who is joined by Anastacio Santanella, Oracio Martinez, Cuco Correa, Fermin Valdes and Pedro Arango. We believe they were playing the Brooklyn Eagles that day as there is a photo extant from April 2, 1935, also by Weems. Note the ball bag marked "Cubans." 2) 1937 Sam Bankhead action portrait in the Dominican Republic as part of the greatest team in baseball history: Ciudad Trujillo. He proudly wears "Trujillo" across his chest, the name of the ruthless dictator who assembled them. RFM of Havana photographer's stamp on verso. 3) 1940s image of Ray Dandridge after fracturing his thumb. The charge to assist is led by manager/legend Dolph Luque while the team doctor attends to the fallen superstar. 4) 1944 Sam Jethroe real photo postcard is shown in a San Juan Senadores uniform in the 1940s. This is a miniature real photo postcard measuring 2.75x3.5". We have seen these before and they are quite rare. It is NOT trimmed. 5) 1948 Cienfuegos Elephants Cuban baseball team photograph features HOFer Lefty Gomez as manager, a young Carl Erskine and Negro Leaguers like Sam Noble, Max Manning, Angel Fleitas, Pedro Pages & Dave Barnhill. Condition is Excellent except for a small stain. One of the nicest collection of Latin/Negro League photographs you will see all in one lot for the taking.
