Hilton Smith Thrice-Signed Questionnaire w/Josh Gibson Content (PSA)

Hilton Smith Thrice-Signed Questionnaire w/Josh Gibson Content (PSA)

Many decades ago our consignor, a journalist, sent out one-page typed questionnaires to former Negro League players as part of a research project he was working on. Offered here is the questionnaire returned to him by Hall of Fame pitcher Hilton Smith. All of Smith's responses to the questions, which include three different "Hilton Smith" signature examples, have been filled out entirely in his hand. Among the more interesting responses by Smith are those given to the following questions: 1) Your best year statistics? "1932. I won 30 lost none." 2) Your overall statistics? "I won probably 400 games." 3) What was your greatest accomplishment when playing ball? "Pitching in 9 All Star Games." 4) If you were to pick the greatest all time team, which team would you choose? "1942 Monarchs." Smith was then asked to name the greatest players he ever saw at each position. Included in his list were Josh Gibson at catcher, Cool Papa Bell in left field, Willie Wells at short stop, and Turkey Stearns in center field. Most notably, Satchel Paige was not listed as the greatest right-handed pitcher he had ever seen. On that line, he wrote "Hilton Smith." All of Smith's responses, including his three signatures, are scripted in blue ink and grade 10/10. The questionnaire remains in Excellent condition overall. PSA has encapsulated the questionnaire and certified the handwriting and signatures as "Authentic."
