Important Mickey Mantle Injures Knee 1951 Wire Photograph

Important Mickey Mantle Injures Knee 1951 Wire Photograph

Here it is. The horrifying moment when Mickey Mantle injured his knee in the 1951 World Series is caught by this original three-shot sequence snapped by an Associated Press staffer with verso stamp. The entire sequence has rarely been seen and lends a Zapruder film-like context to the play, which happened in the 5th inning of game two when Willie Mays lifted a fly to right-center. Mantle, called off by Joe DiMaggio, caught a spike on a drain and ripped his knee to shreds. The first shots show Mantle buckling, then rolling over in agony as DiMaggio grabs the ball. 8 x10 image has some light creasing o/w NRMT.
