Joe DiMaggio Oil on Canvas from Toots Shor
Art from the heart. Toots Shor was famous as the owner of "Toots Shor's Reataurant." Actually there were three different Toots Shor Restaurants, all in Manhattan in New York City. Shor was a celebrity himself as his restaurant attracted the most famous entertainers, athletes, and writers of its time, mostly from 1940 though the 1960s. Joe DiMaggio was a regular customer, along with such celebrities as Jackie Gleason, Frank Sinatra, and Robert F. Kennedy. Shor's place was mostly patronized by male clientele as a place to unwind with a drink, and food that was of the basic steak and potato type. In the painting, DiMaggio is depicted in an almost surreal manner at what appears to be spring training. The clouds amidst the blue sky lend an ethereal quality to the piece. Shor was not a professional artist, but the portrait by Shor of his good friend DiMaggio is a worthy memorial to two American icons. 25x40".
