John L. Sullivan Boxing Belt & Sash

John L. Sullivan Boxing Belt & Sash

Offered is one of the most important pieces of boxing history ever to come to the auction block. True museum quality pieces originating from the great John L. Sullivan, which have resided at the estate of late family member, General William Sullivan & Mrs. Blanche Sullivan until recently. The mounted display encased in glass and frame is highlighted by a ring belt made for the original great American sports idol known as the Boston Strong Boy. The black velvet belt is 32” in length and adorned with 9 brass ornaments - 4 square & 5 circular. The trim is done in woven metallic thread. At top is a red white & blue satin sash, which Sullivan wore around his waist while entering the ring. Placed at the center of the display are three cabinet photos, 5x7” in size - two of which are facsimile signed by Sullivan. Below the photos is a tattered and worn turquoise & red crossed ribbon adorned with 12 gold stars. This display was originally obtained by the General, William Sullivan at a Sullivan family reunion. Being a distant relative of the great prizefighter, William Sullivan returned home with this amazing piece in his possession. It is now being presented as a golden, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a deserving member of the general public, having been recently obtained from the gentleman who probated the estate, while also helping the General and Mrs. Sullivan with legal matters. This gentleman also served in WWII, and practiced law after returning home from serving as a Special Agent in the FBI. He came to own this item, among others from the deceased General’s wife as gifts for his antique shop, which was opened following his retirement from practicing law. LOA. Framed display measures 39x30”.
