September 7, 1892 John L. Sullivan vs. Jas J. Corbett Full Ticket (4.25x3.25")

September 7, 1892 John L. Sullivan vs. Jas J. Corbett Full Ticket (4.25x3.25")

Presented is a full, unused ticket to one of the biggest events of the 19th century. On September 7, 1892, Heavyweight Champion John L. Sullivan defended his title against the brash “Gentleman” Jim Corbett at the Olympic Club in New Orleans. For Sullivan this would be the final defense of the title he won ten years earlier from Paddy Ryan. Corbett, the younger man, frustrated Sullivan with his great boxing skill and speed and won by KO in round 21. This was the first world heavyweight title fight fought with the gloves. Ticket names both fighters and “Grand Glove Contest for the Heavyweight Championship of the World.” Minor foxing, some edge wear, and staining, but otherwise one of the strongest examples ever seen.
