Large 19th Century Photograph of Robert Fitzsimmons
Robert Fitzsimmons (“Ruby Robert”) was a blacksmith, but he found he could fight and began as a professional in 1883. Considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, he stopped some big names: Jack Dempsey, James J. Corbett and George Gardner to name a few. Presented here is a rare original antique photograph of Robert Fitzsimmons taken in the early 1890’s by Richard K. Fox and the Police Gazette. Fitzsimmons is posed in full fight pose, bare fisted with his belt sash and togs. The photograph is mounted on board and measures 11” x 15 ?”. The image is crisp and clear. There is some chipping along the bottom and one spot on the right edge. None affects the image. A magnificent early shot of Fitzsimmons and exceedingly rare, especially in this size.
