Magnificent Moses Fleetwood Walker Imperial Cabinet Photograph With Accompanying Action Photo (2)
A newly discovered previously unknown image representing the first crossing of the color line. Rare early baseball integration is in evidence in this mind-blowing lot of two large format photos. Six decades before Jackie Robinson broke major league baseball's color barrier, Moses Fleetwood Walker was believed to have been the first African-American man to play professional baseball when he suited up for the 1884 Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association. Measures 14.5" x 13", and affixed to its original heavy cardboard mount, the edges appear to be trimmed, but the photo itself is unaffected and otherwise EX-MT. The only specimen known to exist, both photos in this lot originated from the same vendor and sold in the New York area. It may depict Moses Walker and his teammates of the Newark Little Giants of 1887. We say this simply because of the "N" on the uniforms. Tremendous quality high end photo boasts perfect contrast. EX-MT condition. Also, included here is an exceptional team action oversized 18" x 12" albumen photo that came from the same source. A rare and important piece unto itself, it shows only white players that we can see. It, too, is EX-MT. We do not know the relation of the two other Han source, but we feel it is critical to keep them together because of any potential connection historically. The question is whether the action scene is also Walker related. After being cruelly banished from the game, Walker became an important advocate of Black nationalism and a civil rights pioneer beyond the game. A truly important piece that transcends sports.
