Merkle’s Boner Replay Photograph By George Grantham Bain
In September 1908, the Cubs were playing the Giants in New York with the pennant on the line. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th, the Giants had runners on first and third with two outs. Rookie Fred Merkle was the runner on first. The next batter lined a single and the runner at third came home, clinching what appeared to be a Giants victory. The crowd swarmed out onto the field, Merkle thought the game was over, and sprinted off the field. But he had never touched second base! The Cubs alertly grabbed the ball and touched second, and the game was declared a tie when order could not be restored in the ballpark. The two teams met again the next day (9/24/08). Even though the Cubs lost to Mr. Mathewson, they did hold on to the NL pennant. They, of course, went on to win the World Series. The mistake would forever be known in baseball legend as “Merkle’s Boner”. This great photograph, with outstanding period detail, was taken in the old wooden Polo grounds, which burned to the ground in 1911. The photo measures 6 ?” x 4 ?”, and has both Culver Pictures and deaccession stamps on the reverse. Condition is VG, with chipped upper and lower left corners and some minor rounding of the other two corners.
