Naismith Good Sportsmanship Award Presented to Oscar Robertson
An absolutely gargantuan and stunning award - the first we have ever handled - this is the Naismith Good Sportsmanship Award presented to Oscar Robinson on November 25, 2000. The award is given by the Naismith International Basketball Foundation to those that further the values of fun, respect, and teamwork that James Naismith wrote into the original rules of basketball, which can be found on two plaques on the award's base. The massive award stands 30" tall and weighs 41 pounds, with a magnificent three-dimensional sculpture at its top of Naismith in a replica of the gym in which he invented the game, which has been signed by the artist, Michael Rocne, and rests on a slab of marble. A third plaque on the solid wood base reads "in recognition of significant and lasting contributions to the sport, and the spirit, of basketball," along with a quote from Naismith reading "Sportsmanship: Let us all be able to lose gracefully and to win courteously; to accept criticism as well as praise; and, last of all, to appreciate the attitude of the other fellow at all times." The intricacy and scope of its design is truly something to behold, but this award also distinguishes itself from others in that it is presented on an ad hoc basis, unlike most sports awards which are given annually following a competition.
