Native Americans Chief Bender And Chief Meyer Photo
Oct. 18, 1911 photo of the two “chiefs” – Giants catcher Harry “Chief” Meyer and A’s pitcher Charles “Chief” Bender – during the World Series, with each not looking particularly fond of the other. Neither were these Native Americans fond of being stereotyped by the “Chief” nickname, which they believed overshadowed their talents -- the Dartmouth-educated Meyer hit .291 lifetime and Bender went 210-127 with a 2.48 ERA. Bender’s 6-4 career WS record included 9 complete games, three coming in 1911 when he twice came up against Christy Mathewson and beat him once, as well as winning the clinching Game 5 13-2. The 5 x 7” photo has the date and “Culver Pictures Inc.” stamped on back with a handwritten “Bender + Meyer”. G w/surface paper loss on 3 corners and adhesive residue along the top edge, though the image of the 2 men are untouched.
