Olympia Cornerstone and Dedication Document

Olympia Cornerstone and Dedication Document

One of Michigan's "Masonry Marvels" was the old Olympia Arena in Detroit. The sport's facility's groundbreaking was in 1926. The masonry cornerstone was placed on March 8, 1927 and it formally opened to the public on October 15, 1927. Sixty years later in 1987, the home of the Detroit Red Wings was demolished but fortunately for hockey fans everywhere, these pieces of Olympia's cornerstone were saved. Interestingly during the demolition, this 2x2x8" lead box was found that contained an interesting letter from the Mayor of Detroit John W. Smith. Dated March 8, 1927 and on City of Detroit letterhead, this commemoration letter describes Detroit's enthusiasm and admiration for the newly built "temple of recreation" and is signed by Detroit's Mayor, President of the NHL Frank Calder and other Detroit dignitaries. The stones are currently in many pieces and have some of the Olympia lettering present. Also comes with the original lead box, original letter (very fragile), photocopy of letter and 1970's image of the Arena.

Very heavy , several boxes.
