Pair of 1909 Painted Baseball Andirons

Pair of 1909 Painted Baseball Andirons

Pair of figural cast-iron andirons, depicting, respectively, a baseball pitcher and batter. These andirons were produced in 1909 and have always been highly coveted by both baseball and folk-art collectors. The reverse of each displays moderate oxidation, but one can still barely make out the standard manufacturing engraving "RBS/09." Both andirons are painted and while it is impossible to say whether or not the paint is original, it is certainly a vintage application and greatly adds their appeal. Each andiron retains nearly all of its paint, and displays wear commensurate with its age and former use, including abrasions. The pitcher andiron is missing an approximately two-inch piece of the green base. This is an outstanding pair of these attractive turn-of-the century baseball display pieces which remain fully functional and would be perfectly at home in front of any fireplace.
