Passenger Manifest for Air Force One Flight of JFK Assassination Return & LBJ Swearing In
It is things like these that we are surprised even still exist. Here is the actual passenger list for Air Force One returning from Dallas after the assassination. Not only was it carrying our murdered President, but also acted as the venue for the swearing in ceremony of Lyndon Johnson. It was vital to the soon to be President Johnson that the world see a verifiable transition, thereby preventing potential anarchy. At the time, who knew what had really happened. It could be a revolution or a Russian plot with more to come. Therefore, official White House Photographer Captain Cecil Stoughton was ordered to come aboard while the plane was still on the ground. and take one of the most iconic photographs in world history. Later, Stoughton needed the passenger list so he could identify the people in his photograph. He was given the list and left the plane before it took off to have it developed and sent out on the wire worldwide. The list was signed in ink by Sergeant C. Chance, who was basically signing off on a highly official and top secret document. This is a single typescript page, 10.5x8" with two horizontal folds, and light wrinkling at edges. Originally obtained from the family of Cecil Stoughton, it was beautifully archivally framed by them. Shown here is the classic image taken by Stoughton, which is not included in the lot. One of the ultimate representations of the immediate aftermath of Dallas. We can picture the photograph this piece is forever linked to, showing a humbled LBJ being sworn into office. Beside them is Mrs. Kennedy in shock, still in her blood splattered dress that she bravely refused to change out of so the world would see what they had done to her husband. And to Camelot.
