Rare 1910s Reach Buckskin First Baseman's Mitt
Presented is a rare 1910s Reach first baseman's mitt. The 1910s era was dominated by the American League, which won eight of the ten World Series in this period. Walter Johnson, Hall of Fame right hander for the Washington Senators, was the top Major League pitcher of the 1910s, as The Big Train had an amazing 265 wins, with 2,219 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.59 during the 1910s. The American League also had most of the great hitters of the time: Ty Cobb, Joe Jackson, and a young Babe Ruth. One key event in this time period was the short-lived Federal League, a legitimate third league rival for two seasons with the American and National Leagues. World War I took many Major League players for military service and almost caused baseball to be shut down for the war. Another important event of the era was the 1919 World Series in which eight Chicago White Sox conspired with gamblers to throw the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds, who won the eight-game Series 5-3, an illegitimate win for the Senior Circuit. The offered mitt has a Reach tag on the back of the mitt, along with a buckle for a wrist strap. The palm is made of very soft buckskin, while the back has conventional brown leather. The glove shows great use, with creases, and some very small stains. This rare mitt, over a century old, is a great vintage keepsake. The glove, as was usual in that time period, favors padding over flexibility, and it illustrates why even first baseman of that time would try to use two hands when possible. The glove is in excellent condition.
