T206 Rube Kroh With Ultra Rare Piedmont OVER-PRINT
Even the most advanced collector will have a hard time stating he has ever come across a card quite like this. At first glance, the card resembles a common T206 of Rube Kroh; however, once it is turned over, the reverse displays something truly unique. This card has a Sovereign tobacco advertisement, and then on top of it, there is a full Piedmont tobacco advertisement. There is much speculation on how this card exists. Upon speaking to a printing expert, this is the probable scenario: often when cards are printed, a test batch is run first, to make sure the colors, printing plate, and centering are all correct. Upon inspecting this card, one will see the Sovereign advertisement is about 3/4 of the way misprinted. When this was noticed, the sheet was probably put into a scrap pile. Considering cards with several different tobacco advertisements were printed at the same factory (in order to save paper) the printer probably used the Sovereign sheet to run a test batch for the Piedmont advertising backs? How come nothing like this has ever surfaced before? One can come to the conclusion that because cards of this nature would have been considered “test proofs” at the printing mill, they were probably tossed into the trash at the end of the day. How this particular example exists is a conundrum. All which is know is this card is sure to be a conversation piece, and a true rarity, in any collection. The card was sent to PSA to confirm it is authentic; the card is not trimmed or altered in any way. We were told it was given the designation of authentic because PSA has not seen anything like this before to justify presenting the card with a numerical grade.
