The Marichal-Roseboro Incident Photograph by Neil Leifer

Entered into important 1968 APPA photo contest by the greatest sports photographer of our time, Neil Leifer. Hypnotic image of the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants teams moments after Marichal clubbed catcher John Roseboro over the head while at bat. A shocked Roseboro inspects his own blood (on his hand) while a disbelieving Willie Mays pulls him away. Sandy Koufax & the Dodgers cannot believe it either, registering stunned faces over this most disturbing of unforgettable moments. [Marichal reacted to Roseboro throwing back to the mound at his ear.] Perfect vintage photo is 19x12.5", mounted on 16x20" black cardboard. Verso is 4.5x3" contest label listing category as "Sports," Title of Picture "Baseball Brawl," photographer "Neil Leifer" and "Organization" as "Sports Illustrated." Fine condition. Discovered in a home previously owned by Leifer who is best known for his work with Sports Illustrated and specifically for the image of Muhammad Ali standing menacingly over Sonny Liston.
