The Rarest Christy Mathewson Book

The Rarest Christy Mathewson Book

One of the Hall of Fame's "First Five," Christy Mathewson authored a primer on the art of pitching called "Pitching in a Pinch." Released in 1912, it was later translated into other languages, including Japanese in 1913, as we see in this extremely rare copy... the only one we know of. Far different than the U.S. versions, this particular tome features illustrations of Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie, as well as other elite major leaguers of the day. Among Mathewson's revelations in the book is his theory on conserving energy. It has been repaired many years ago but is a sensational piece as is, even though you'll need a degree in Japanese to understand the content. Mathewson still holds several records, including the National League mark for wins with 373.
