Turn of the Century Spalding Princeton Style Football Helmet
This remarkable turn of the century football helmet made of soft, brown leather was worn by the Princeton University Tigers. For collectors, this fact will resonate with excitement, as Princeton was where intercollgiate fooball was born, dating back to the 1880s. Way back then, the Princeton team first adopted the orange and black scheme, and adopted the name of the Tigers. (The "orange" actually goes back further, as it was in honor of William of Orange of the House of Nassau.) Stunning helmet has two ear flaps with extra padding inside and air holes by each ear and shows great usage and wear, but the original stitching is still intact. The Spalding stamp is on the helmet. All in all, it's as pretty an antique as any Chippendale. This remarkable historical treasure is one of only a very few still known to exist. We further point out that it is not a lacrosse helmet, but rather authentic gridiron headgear from the college that began it all. Comes with a copy of a page from the Spalding catelog showing the same helmet.
