Two Circa 1937 Howie Morenz Souvenir Transfers With Original Envelope
Many hockey old timers maintain that Howie Morenz was hockey’s first bona fide superstar. He was positively electric on the ice and was known as “the Mitchell Meteor” in honor of his hometown and breakneck skating speed. In January of 1937 he broke his leg against the Black Hawks. Everyone knew it was the end of his career but in early March the hockey world learned and was stunned by the news that Morenz had died as a result of complications from his injury. All of hockey mourned, especially the citizens of Montreal. Transfers were originally put out shortly after Morenz’s death and against all odds these two have somehow survived. They are very fragile and picture the hockey great in color. Below his image on each is “Howie Morenz 1902-1937.” Even more impressive is that the original glassine envelope that these came in is still here. Printed on the envelope in English and French is “Souvenir of Howie Morenz-Price 3 for 5 cents.” Directions and the company who made them (Dubach of Montreal) are also printed. Technically the transfers are VG and the envelope G but they present very well.
