Vogel's Minstrel's 1890s Football Poster (27x41")
The finest example of football graphics there is. 1890s minstrel poster advertises the “Big City Minstrels" led by impresario John W. Vogel "The Minstrel King." But the real star here are the graphics on this explosive vaudeville poster. In the midst of this lunacy is "A Satire on the Famous Hale and Yarvard Game - A Battle for Honor and Gore." The game is sheer violence, from the ball being shot with a pistol to the player on far right armed with a meat cleaver and straight razor. The graphics come alive somewhat to the left of MAD magazine. Interestingly, the women fans appear to be white are at least very light skinned black yet suffer from the same bloodlust. A magnificent piece, this is the only specimen known to exist. This was the centerpiece of a longtime football collection and has not seen the light of day in decades. The poster itself measures 27x41" (framed to 30x44") and has some crude restoration that could (and should be) be redone with ease (we could not have the work done ourselves due to obtaining this right as the catalogue deadline closed). Colors are stupendous and need no aid which is the key. When finished you have a piece that is museum quality and of great cultural import.
