Wally Schang By George Grantham Bain

Wally Schang By George Grantham Bain

Walter Schang spent 19 years in the American League and was one of baseball’s top catchers in his time. He caught some of the best pitchers of his era, including Hall of Famers Herb Pennock, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Waite Hoyt, Lefty Grove and Babe Ruth. Schang broke in as a rookie with the A’s who went on to win it all in 1913. He was traded to the Red Sox in 1918 and they promptly won it all. In 1921 he was traded once again, this time to the New York Yankees. This time he could only help his team to a league championship. The next year the Yankees won another pennant. It wasn’t until 1923 that he helped them to a World Championship. In 1930 he returned to Philadelphia and they won it all. The guy was a winner. He is the only player to be on three different World Championship teams. Photo shows him in front of the dugout, leaning on the knob of a bat. Sole unidentified person in dugout. Above the dugout a full house of fans. Photo is dated Sept. 25, 1922. Couple of corner chips but overall EX-MT.
