Willie Mays Puerto Rican Contract

Willie Mays Puerto Rican Contract

This is the Puerto Rican League contract between Willie Mays and the Santurce Club for the 1954-55 season. This unsigned contract covers the period which includes two memorable events in Mays’s career: On January 11, 1955, while preparing for an exhibition game in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mays had a run-in with teammate Ruben Gomez. Apparently, Gomez stepped into the batting cage ahead of the “Say Hey” kid and BP pitcher Milt Ralat declined to throw to him. Ultimately, Mays dropped Gomez with one punch and the two later apologized to one another. On February 12, 1955, Mays hit a HR in the 11th inning of Santurce’s 4-2 win over Venezuela in the Caribbean Series.
