Works Projects Administration Wire Service Photos (21)

Works Projects Administration Wire Service Photos (21)

A very determined worker on a picket line holds a sign saying "We Refuse to Starve Quietly", catching the look and feel of this collection of twenty-one wire service photos dating from 1937 - 1939. The Works Projects Administration, created in 1935, was then under attack and facing severe cutbacks. Thousands of workers, most just beginning to recover from the Depression, had recently been laid off, resulting in widespread labor unrest. These black and white news photos effectively capture the pride and determination of the workers, and place the events in historical context. Most of the photographs have full captions and wire service stampings on the reverse, and a number have the resulting newsprint attached. Size ranges from 6 1/2” X 8 1/2” to 8” x 12”. Overall condition is EX.
