1822 Zachary Taylor ALS
Handwritten one-page letter from the 12th President emanates straight out of the Louisiana Purchase / Compromise of 1850 era. Penned completely in his own hand and addressed to “Major W. Bradford,” the letter is dated March 8, 1822 from Fort Selden, a temporary frontier post, which the President occupied for 4 months between 1821-22. Introducing Surgeon, Thomas Lawson, in black fountain ink, it reads: “This will be handed you by my friend Surgeon Thos. Lawson of the U.S. Army who is just setting out for Fort Smith at which place he expects to be detained some six or eight weeks. During his stay at your place any attention it may be in your power to extend to him will confer an obligation on your obt. Servant. Z. Taylor.” Ink is only slightly faded, grading “6” out of a possible 10. Paper measures 8x9.5”, slightly toned. Except for original mailing folds, EX. Address written on verso also in Taylor’s hand.
