1827 Charles Carroll ALS Written as Sole Surviving Signer of the Declaration of Independence
Gaze in bewilderment at the penmanship of elder American Statesman, Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Handwritten letter was penned on April 26, 1827 by Carroll as the sole surviving Signer of the Declaration of Independence. In black fountain pen, it reads, “Dear Sir, I have just received your letter of this date and thank you for ordering from the Havanna by Mrs. MacTavish request the chocolate therein mentioned; as you prudently directed the quantity to be divided, the box received I presume contains only a part of the quantity ordered, when the remainder comes please to let me know the cost and it shall be paid. I remain with great respect, Dear Sir, Y’r most hum Serv’t, Ch. Carroll of Carrollton. Ink is only slightly bled and hardly faded, grading “7” out of a possible 10. Paper is slightly toned and creased, VG. Measures 8x10”. Emanates from legendary autograph collection.
