1863 Civil War Baseball Letter
One of the few pieces we have seen that combine the Civil War and the National Game (the whole point of the War). Union Soldier's letter measuring 5x8", four full pages in pencil on one foldover sheet, dated April 24 1863 (Boston). By George G. Learned (1st Massachusetts Infantry) to Sgt. George O. Jewett (17th Massachusetts Infantry). Fantastic content: "Work is awful dull in Boston and now is a good time for getting recruits. Baseball and cricket are played out." Also, refers to the New Orleans 4th Regiment as the "Nigger Brigade." EX. The first Civil War baseball letter we have seen.
